Safety Measures
Safety & Security
Visitors must sign in and out at the main office and wear a visitors badge while in the building. Schools are required, as per state code, to conduct monthly fire and emergency drills throughout the year. Emergency plans have been developed and will be practiced and modified, as appropriate, to ensure that protocols are effective when responding to emergencies. Discussions with students are age/grade appropriate and it is our goal to maintain a safe, but comfortable learning environment for our students.
Local officials are frequently consulted with and are on site for these drills. Their feedback helps to inform us of our response procedures.
Building Access
-
All doors, including the main entrance will be locked during the school day.
-
All visitors must enter and exit the building using the main entrance (door #1) before, during and after school.
-
Staff and students are not permitted to open up any door for visitors.

Visitors must sign in and out at the main office and wear a visitors badge while in the building.
Parking & Traffic Around Hillside
Hillside is primarily a neighborhood school to where most children walk either from home or from the designated drop-off areas on Belmont Drive, South Ashby Dr and Hillside Avenue. Please accept the following reminder regarding general safety during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal, which will help keep our wonderful school safe for all children:
-
If you drive your child to school, please park along Belmont Dr, South Ashby Ave, or Hillside Ave. There is no parking, drop-off or pick-up in the oval or school parking lot. Unfortunately, the school was not designed to accommodate this type of traffic pattern.
-
Please follow all traffic safety rules when dropping off children.
-
The parking lot is for staff parking only. Visitors must always park off-site as we have limited parking.
-
Remember to mind the yellow curb at drop-off areas near stationed crossing guards. There is absolutely no parking along these curbs. This will help keep drop-off traffic moving.
-
Mind all traffic rules, including the speed limit and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
-
Do not pull into or block neighbor's driveways.
-
Let your children out on the curbside only.
Morning Arrival
-
All students not involved in early morning activities will line up inside the building. Supervision begins at 7:30 a.m. Do not leave your child unattended prior to that time. Students can only enter the building from Door #9 (Kindergarten) or Door #5 (lower gym).
-
Students and parents should always use the stairs or path to access the blacktop. Running or walking down the hill is dangerous.
-
Students participating in early morning instructional activities - Band, Chorus, Orchestra, GT Art, or GT Music - may be dropped off at the main entrance at 7:30 a.m. or the time specified by the teacher.
-
The bell rings at 7:55 a.m. The late bell rings at 8:00 a.m. and students arriving after the bell are considered tardy and must report to the office.
-
Students in grade 3 and above may ride their bicycles to school with parental permission. Parents must notify teachers of such students. They may enter via South Ashby or Belmont and use the bicycle racks in either area.
Afternoon Dismissal
-
All students in grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 2:42 p.m. in accordance with the Student Dismissal from School policy and procedures. Kindergarteners will be dismissed from their assigned door at 2:37 p.m.
